PDF-X-Robot workflow automation for on demand printing!
|
 |
--A User Says: "We keep receiving PDF files for publication ads using fonts that aren't embedded correctly. - This is a BIG problem we aren't used to with our reliable PDF-Robot output."
Important: You can't edit text unless the font is embedded in the Adobe PDF file or is installed on your system. It is also easy to accidentally embed a substituted font. So, be careful as these are final edits that can't be easily reversed.
In Acrobat 6 Pro, how to embed or unembed your fonts using the TouchUp Text tool:
Tools Menu > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Text Tool
(A) Locate the text of the font that you wish to embed and or subset then select or click on the text whose font embedding or subsetting you want to edit in the acrobat pdf file.
|
! - Paragraphs of text will be enclosed in a bounding box. You can select text within the paragraph by clicking and then dragging across the text.
|
(B) Then, Control-click (Mac OS), or Right-click (Windows), and choose Properties. This will open the TouchUp Properties dialog box. This is where you can perform acrobal pdf editing.
(C) In the TouchUp Properties box, click on the Text tab, this will display the font name, font properties, together with the embedding and subset capabilities.
(D) For a list of all the fonts, you can scroll through the Font menu. Document fonts, used in the document, are listed first. Your system fonts, or available fonts are listed below the document fonts.
|
! -
Permissions and Font Conditions will indicate whether font embedding and subsetting are allowed. There are many fonts out there that cannot be embedded. This is why adobe type 1 are favored. Whenever you run into these fonts, you should discontinue their use.
can embed - font condition where you can select both the embed and subset options. For the
can embed for print and preview only - font condition where you can select the embed option.
cannot embed - neither the embed or subset option is available, you can only unembed or subset embed the font.
no system font available - the embed and subset options are disabled.
|
(E) In order to embed a font, be sure that the Embed Selected Font checkbox is checked. If you embed a font and the expected font is not installed on your system, font substitution occurs and the viewing results may be unacceptable, thus ruining the pdf file for good print production.
|
! - About Font Subsetting - here's a brief overview of what font subsetting is and when you should and should not use it. Font subsetting is usually used to decrease the size of the adobe acrobat pdf file. It is also used to tightly "lock down" the text from changing or getting modified. To embed and preserve the entire font rather than a subset, make sure that Subset is not selected.
You should not subset - If you ever plan on editing, correcting, or modifying the acrobat pdf file, you should not subset, don't use font subsetting, or set to 0% when distilling your acrobat pdf in acrobat distiller. Font subsetting will limit your ability to perform text changes and edits later
You should subset the fonts - If don't plan on editing, correcting, or modifying the acrobat pdf file, and want it to be as locked down as possible, you should subset the fonts, use font subsetting, or set to 100% when distilling your acrobat pdf in acrobat distiller. Font subsetting will limit any ability to perform text changes and edits later, and will lock down the text in addition to cutting file size a little.
