Hi Jimbo, sure, you should be able to work that out. But, most people will just drop the PDF or postscript into a hot folder. Are you printing from a Mac or PC, and what OS are you printing from? Do you have the Apogee manuals top look into? It's not a RIP that I am intimate with. But it's all built on the Adobe platform. I would look to set-up a hot folder for the PDF to be dropped into. Printing direct to a device is really not normal PDF workflow method.

The Avantra 30 is a imagesetter which is (of course) useless without a RIP, so I will assume you know that you can't image to it "directly" - to help you, we would need to know what RIP - if really old, that might be an AGFA Viper, Taipan, Cobra RIP and would come with an Application named AGFASet, where you create a PPD and then, you would see that as a printer when you 'print' from Acrobat.

Many people also print to Avantras from third party rips - and again, this normally requires some set up of drivers so your Mac or PC can "see" this as a printer.

More geeky types have systems that use LPD/LPR approaches...

And as AGFA sells a PDF workflow named Apogee, this would require setting up that device in a Job Ticket, but I will assume you do NOT have apogee - yes ?

I am running OsX 10.6. I have a hot folder set up, but I have been making a InDesign CS4 document, then linking PDF and letting InDesign determine the size with marks etc.
I have used hot folder with only a couple of small problems when initially setup. I just cannot get used to hotfolder, I like printing to it like I have in Indesign and was wondering why when I try to print like that in acrobat 9 that it does not RIP right.


The RIP is a AGFA Apogee Series 3.1 running on windows 2000

It sounds like your RIP is not able to correctly process PDFs. Have you tried saving the PDF back to a previous version (PDF v.1.3 or PDF v.1.4)? Depending on the age of your RIP you may want to upgrade your RIP to a newer version. Not knowing much about the Apogee you would have to ask Agfa about that product. There are other third party RIPs like a Harlequin RIP http://rti-rips.com/IMAGESETTERRIPS/AgfaRIPKIT.html that would allow you to output currently up to PDF v.1.7. Your RIP may be the problem but you would have to do some further tests (possibly sending PDF 1.3 files) to see if it can handle any type of PDF.
