Microsoft Excel .XLS file import issue in QuarkXPress

First of all, I apologize if this topic already exists. I searched the forums for it, but I couldn-t find smth, so...

I have a problem when importing xls datasheets in Quark. By copying them directly from Excel and then pasting into a picture frame in Quark, everything looks good. The problem comes when using the Distiller (or simply the Quark option to export as PDF) to make the pdf file from that layout. The Excel picture (tabel) only has the borders and text, no colors, no gray rasters, nothing, no fills.

Anyone got a way around this?

Software used: QuarkXPress 7.3, MS Office 2003, Acrobat Pro 7.0, on a Win XP SP2 machine.

Import of MS Excel into Quark Xpress Problem

Hello,

The way you are doing it is a method that may (usually) work but only with very simple files. So, what I do is always make the file into an PDF, then an EPS, that (always) works. Quark Xpress prefers an EPS or Tiff over anything else.

(1) What you do is print the file from MS Excel to Distiller, be sure color PDF settings are set to CMYK so that you don't come out with an RGB file. Open & Set your Distiller to PDF/X-1a before you print is best.

(2) Then open that file in Acrobat and save as an EPS file. Set level 2 eps, cmyk color space, and embed convert fonts to level 1 if possible.

(3) Now, place this EPS into Quark and take it from there. The EPS may look rough in the preview but that's displat only, it will output very clean and clear.

Good Luck and thanks for joining the forums.

thx

Hi,

The thing is i've been following the steps you described for a long time now, but thanks anyway.

However, using QuarkXPress 3, 4 or 5, I was able to paste the excel table into a picture frame and to obtain the expected result (though only for one-color plate - grayscale documents, for example) when using distiller to make the pdf. My question was why the later versions of Quark (6, 6.5 and 7) doesn't respond to this.

Again, many thanks for your response.

How do you build a simple remote controlled robot? I am having a RoboWar in school, which is basically a soccer match between remote controlled robots. I was just wondering the easiest way to build a remote controlled robot that could play soccer. I would also like some instructions/guidelines on how to do this.
