imaging inDesign Vs. Quark

I deal with a lot of jobs that need personalized imaging. I use quark because I was told long ago that the program that it was run through was quark native. We toss back and forth the idea of switching to Indesign but I do not want imaging issues. What if any are the issues with InDesign if the program works native with Quark. What is the program? is it a Quark extension or something all together different.
Thanks,

variable data printing with Quark Xpress vs. InDesign

Hello,

Welcome to the forums. We do between 3-4 million pieces a month and never use Indesign for the variable data. If a document is in InDesign, we convert it to a PDF as a template art and use QuarkXpress to link all data and do impositions etc. We get maybe 60% or so of our commercial jobs in InDesign here but for all our variable data work, InDesign is not as efficient, so we prefer all those jobs submitted in Quark because it's faster and the tools are much better.

HP Indigo has been a leader in varaiable data and they have an QuarkXpress Xtension called YoursTruly Designer. This Xtension can do impositions and complex variable data programs. So, to me, and most people running Indigo Presses QuarkXpress is the preferred application for this type of work. I would not recommend switching to InDesign for Variable data Printing.

We don't do much variable data, but when we do, we use quark....(we have an Indigo 3000 HP).

FWIW, we do use Yours Truly for InDesign, but it is really "quarky" (no pun intended).

Quarks Yours Truly is a lot more user friendly and is more easily customizable...

Quark 7

Does yoursTruly work with Quark 7 or only 6.5? The industry is at such a point that neither quark or Indesign is the standard. I do not want to make a mistake and make a change to one or the other and then be stuck because of printability. Are there still a lot of Postscript 3 issues with transparencies and Indesign? What are the major problems I should be looking for before I release a file print. What features should never be used etc. Thanks in advance for all of your help. This site is a just what I was looking for.

try not to use the quark transparency atuff - it gets flattened and potentially screwed up and if you have spot colours underneath - forget it

transparency - well it depends on what you are doing.

if you're designing ask whoever receives your files what format they want (as opposed to what you believe you want to send)

if you insist on importing pdf's into quack you wont get anything newer than a 1.3 pdf in there - basically a 1.3 pdf means flattened transparencies and...well - the pattern is quark does not truely understand transparency in either 1 bit or 8 bit - so just have a good think about the end file, end product, resolutions and what might be needed to accurately reproduce your masterpiece.

do it all in indesign and save a bunch of headaches - but it depends on what you are doing really

vdp is split between indy and quack on which is best/easiest. repro, imho, is waaay down the cs suite route - quack is lagging behind somewhat

PS is king.

illy is superb

indesign

You could look at darwin which runs in indesign and quark. The pc indesign version you can do variable images and it's alot cheaper than xmpie. Xmpie is a bit more user freindly. Xmpie has a nice feature for making text fit in a box without having to right a rule like yours truely. Also you don't say if you run and indigo as yours truely is written for the indigo's.

lettershop

I release all of my files to our client who sends them to a lettershop. I am trying to find the best and safest way to release them so that no matter where they send them they will work easily with variable copy.

Hello,

Welcome to the Prepressforums. I have replied to and sort of redirected this post over to the Digital Printing Forum where VDP and POD and such are disussed. This is more Digital Printing than Computer to Plate discussion. Thanks for joining/posting.
