Quarkexpress 4 to PDF

I have a magazine in Spain for which I use quarkexpress 4 and cs2. Cs2 I can convert straight to PDF but I cannot work out how to do it on Quark. I've read i need to use adobe distiller but have no idea how to use or even if i have it? Is it part of Acrobat reader, i have 8.
Aprreciate any help!

You will get far more knowledgable and comprehensive responses than what I can offer, but, as we've not long emerged from relying on Quark 4 (to Indd) I can offer you that, yes, the best way to create a PDF from Qxd4 is via Distiller, although you could try and use Adobe's free 'PDF Writer' printer. However, I would assume that if you're using Qxd4 that you are on an older OS and that the current PDFwriter may not support it, but, what's the harm in trying. Failing that, if, and a big IF, your computers are set up similarly, you may be able to create the PS file (postscript/printer file) and copy it to another machine that does have Distiller to process it.
Good Luck. Craig.

Quark 4 means you are probably using OS 9. The only way I know is that you need distiller, which does not come with reader. You need acrobat, which you buy, and it comes with distiller. From there, you would need to create a postscript file, and have distiller make a PDF.

I have got my hands on Acrobat pro 6 with distiller, but its in spanish and my spanish isn't that great! Also, how do i save as a postscript file in quark?
My printer told me i have to select adobe ps as my printer but i don't know how to get that option?
I'm trying to get my hands on quark 6/7, would that make life easier?

If you're able to create PDFs from Indd, and the document is not too complex, you may well be better to try and open the Qxd file in Indd, do a little fixing and export it from there.
No wonder you're having difficulty creating a PDF, you're asking about grass-roots info starting with 'how to create a postscript file'. If we (everyone else help here please) give you basic points, let us know if you need a detailed step-by-step plan;
It depends on what printer PPD your using as to how your PDF will be made, a mono-only printer will only create a mono image. You need a colour printer PPD, I use DDAP which you'll find on the net, it's device independent,
In your printer dialog/window there's a button at the bottom "Printer", click on this, in the next Printer window at the top right corner theres a "Destination:" option which will likely say printer, you need to change this to "File", then the 'Print' button at the bottom will change to 'Save', hit this and you'll be asked where to save the 'Postscript file'.
After you've chosen your location, hit 'Save' again and this will take you back to your print options and there you can choose your printer PPD, media size, etc. OK, that's your PS file.
Another idea: whilst in the 'Destination;Printer/File' window, you can hit the button on the left with option "General" and go down to "Save File As". In these options you could try and set to save as an EPS file **With Fonts Included** and this way the file created will contain all it's data and you can take it to another machine for distilling on someone elses Acrobat. NOTE: this EPS file will font embedded will create a large file, make sure you have the drive capacity and if you need to transport it some method to write it to removable disk.
Good luck and please keep us informed on how you go.
Craig.

PDFs from Quark 4 via Distiller

Here are the basic steps, use the application help for more detailed steps:

  • Create a watched folder in Adobe Distiller
  • Create a PostScript printer using OS 9 Desktop Printer Utility (Use Translator PostScript) and point it to your Distiller watched folder
  • In Quark, print your document using the Adobe Distiller PPD to the printer you setup in step 2

You can do other things too that can help your workflow like assigning a PDFX-1A profile to the watched folder, etc... But this will get you going.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice but have been busy on other projects lately. My state of play: Have downloaded off adobe.com a driver called 'generic postscript printer', the only one I could find there. When I've seen my printer guy select his in quark it just says Adobe PS, does this mean there different? I looked for the printer destination folder but could not find anything like this, I'm using Vista, any clues?
I did manage to get my hands on an english distiller and have created a 'watched folder', wohoo!
So I'm sorry to say I'm still failing miserably, but not defeated!
