Problems opening InDesignCS2 files with InDesignCS3

Hello!

I used to work with InDesign CS2 and now I upgraded it to CS3 version. But now, with InDesign CS3, I am unable to open files done with CS2. While loading the file, the application closes unexpectedly, without showing any warning or error. It just disappears. Does someone have the same error? It there any way to fix it?

Thank you.

1st question, PC or Mac, and what operating system.
I can not say I have seen this problem without there being a problem with the original files, or with the program installation. Do you still have CS2 installed on that machine? If yes, can you open the files with that. If yes, do a save as and save a new file, and then try opening in CS3.

PC with an updated win XP. I had no problem with the InDesign CS3 installation.

I do not have CS2 in this PC but I have it in another. I tried creating an empty document with CS2 and I can open it. But if I try to open a non empty file, the program suddenly quits while loading. The most far I got was removing all pages and leaving only the master ones. Then I am able to open the file, but when I click to see the master pages, InDesign gets closed again Sad . I also tried saving the CS2 document in .inx, but still the same.

Yes, I know it's a bit strange xD . I tried uninstalling and installing again and the same problem appears. Am I the only one with this problem? Everyone can open CS2 files with CS3?

Thank you :·)

Without taking an indepth look at your machine in person, my guess from your description is that CS2 did not un-install cleanly when you upgraded to CS3 and as a result there is garbage left over from the previous install. This did happen to me on my XP machine. I ended up having to re-format my machine and re-installing everything from scratch. Adobe CS installs stuff to so many different places and deep into the registry and there is no way to reasonably clean it all out. Believe me, I don't take re-formatting a machine lightly and I hate recommending it (I just re-did mine again and it took two days to get it back to where I had it) but sometimes, especially with a Windows based PC, it is the only way to fix things.

Arimi, I just unistalled CS2 from one of our machines yesterday, and I found a PDF file in one of the multiple folders, saying how to manually remove CS2. It has instructions for manually removing from Windows.

----------------------------------------
To uninstall Adobe Creative Suite in Windows
1 -- Close any Adobe products that are open.
2 -- Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel, and double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
3 -- Select Adobe Creative Suite 2, click Remove, and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the entire
suite or individual suite components.
4 -- If you are uninstalling individual components, and you want to remove preferences settings for those
components, select Remove My Preferences.
Note: When you uninstall Acrobat or the entire suite, their preferences settings are automatically removed.
5 -- If you intend to install the product on a different computer, follow the on-screen instructions to transfer the
activation.
6 -- Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel, and double-click Add Or Remove Programs.
7 -- Select Adobe SVG Viewer 3.0, click Remove, and click Yes to confirm deletion.
8 -- Delete the Version Cue folder, if present, from My Documents.
9 -- Delete the following folders, if present, from Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application
Data/Adobe:
• Adobe GoLive
• Camera Raw
• Scripts
• ScriptStore
• Stock Photos
• Workflow
10 -- Delete the Workflow Automation Scripts folder, if present, from Program Files/Common
Files/Adobe/StartupScripts.
11 -- Delete the following folders, if present, from Program Files/Adobe:
• Adobe Acrobat 7.0
• Adobe Creative Suite 2
• Adobe GoLive CS2
• Adobe Help Center
• Adobe Illustrator CS2
• Adobe InDesign CS2
• Adobe Stock Photos
• Adobe Utilities
• Adobe Version Cue CS2

Before wiping the drive and starting from scratch, even before you uninstall the application, try just removing the Preferences files - in each of the CS application packages, CS, CS2, CS3, these preferences have become more and more suseptible to being corrupt easier and easier. It's a common thing the preferences become corrupt and the uninstall does not remove the preferences folder, so when the application is installed again, it just picks up from where it left off, using the old preferences.
The Prefs are in 3 locations; I forget the first on, (am on mac ATM so cant' check), but think it's in <HD>\Windows\Adobe\
- the next is in <HD>\Windows\Doc&Sett\All Users\Application Data\
- the next is in <HD>\Windows\Doc&Sett\<your user name>\Applic Data\

keep us informed on how you go and your solution,

Craig.

Thank you for all your responses. But I didn't had InDesign CS2 installed on this PC, I formatted it first. About removing the preferences files, I also have Photoshop and Acrobat installed, and maybe removing these folders would affect them. I only removed the InDesign ones.

I don't know what to do, I don't think that uninstalling and installing again will solve anything, it can't be a rubbish problem because the first installation was on a clean just-formatted pc. It's all very strange, because no errors where shown during the installation and no errors are shown when I try to open the CS2 files (as I said on the first post, InDesign CS3 just disappears). The only solution I can think of is to format again, but it's a tedious work and I'm afraid it won't fix anything. Maybe I should go back to InDesign CS2. Is CS3 worth for?

Thank you very much.

Oops, sorry Arimi. My bad for not reading that you had CS2 on ANOTHER computer.

Could it be your CS2 installation is bad? Causing something wrong with the files when you open them in CS3?

I could send you a CS2 file from my machine and see if that works...

Thank you nitey4ever! Wow, I AM able to open your file. So maybe the problem is in my CS2. But it's strange, I never had any problem with it...

I found two log files in InDesign's folder, I don't know if it's normal to have them. It seems that I have some problem with AGM.dll. The log shows this:

My husband does IT, so he at least recognizes all the gobbledegook in that log file. He said he'll look it up tomorrow, and see if he can tell you anything about it. But offhand, he's thinking that you aren't in the admin account of that computer and that's why it's not allowing you to access that AGM.dll file. Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. He'll check it out tomorrow for you.

Oh, thank you!!! But I don't really know if this log is related to my problem or is something "normal" to have. And I am in the admin account :/ .

No harm in checking it out for you Smile

He says: Go into event viewer through control panel > administrative tools > event viewer. Check the application logs and search for any errors from adobe, get the event ID and the Source for each and post back. Those are available by double clicking on the error in the application event log.

I did what you told me but in the event viewer there isn't any error from Adobe. Nothing. But I looked in DrWatson's log and there are the InDesign's errors shown (when it crashes, a new log appears). I cannot copy it all here because it is very very big (it shows the stacks, instructions and registers of all the subprocesses). But I think the most interesting are the errors given, which are:

The number of exception might also be interesting. It is c0000005 (access infraction).

InDesignCS2 to CS3 problems

Hi everbody. I work at a general printers and our IT dept. recently upgraded all our machines (Mac & PC) to CS3. It hasn't been too bad. But there is a major problem if the client has used glyphs and bullet points. Indesign CS3 uses a different character set to that of CS2. So even if you have the correct font loaded the character that the glyph will show is different if you open a CS2 file in CS3. Why Adobe has done this I don't know but it's something to be aware of.

I would seriously like to ask all here, "why?".
Why have you all upgraded/changed to CS3?
If it aint broke, don't fix it - so, for what reasons, for what fixes, has anyone here had to get CS3.
I'm not having a go, just legitimately interested why users change there MO as soon as a change is available.
We are a newspaper, commercial printers and general publishers, and although all our work is done in-house, artwork, printing, we are still using much older equipment and applications, because they still do the job. Our newspapers (4 of them) receive outside, agency, supplied material, and there are no compatibility issues.
So, what are your reasons for change?
Craig.

Unecessary Upgrades

Hi Craig,
I agree totally! Unfortunately our printer has to be seen to be using the latest and (not necessarily) greatest of everything. We have to be able to handle anything from a wide variety of programs including Word and Publisher. Apparently our company only bought upgrade licenses and not all new full versions so running both was not an option; now everything that comes in in Indesign 2 gets opened and printed from Indesign 3 so basically our IT dept. is half the problem.
Personally I believe that it should all stay in the program it was created in but then again; I just work here.

I hear ya there, 'I just work here'.
software upgrades, for commercial uses, are so expensive there has to be some good reason to spend the money.
These forums are an excellent way to keep in touch with how the rest of life are living.

thank you,
Craig.

Hi again!

After a lot of "investigation", I have been able to open one of the CS2 files that I couldn't. I saved the file in inx format and deleted the crec elements (< crec ... > < / crec >) of the master pages which made InDesign CS3 crash when I clicked on them. It's a jerry-ringed solution, but at least now I can open the file :p .

Thank you all for your help!

Try removing/turning off fonts until you locate the corrupt one.
