One simple question first, do you have Distiller? This is the program that comes with Adobe Acrobat that makes PDF files. If yes, then we can help set you up to make good PDF files. If no, you would need to buy this to make them

No, I don't have Acrobat. Does Acrobat 8 Standard come with the Distiller? I read something about coverting a file to postscript? Would this be an option? Thanks so much for your help!

Katie

Yes, you will need to get it. Then from there you will need to set up the preferences to what kind of use you are looking to get out of your PDFs. I have a few different ones, each for different reasons-proofing, printing, websites, etc. You will make a postscript file and then let Distiller turn it into a PDF. If you look around this forum, I know Joe has posted a few times a lot of helpful things when setting it up.

Good Luck

Hi,

Don't know if this works on a PC, but on a Mac you can simply go to File/Export/Layut as PDF. Clicking hte 'options' button allows you to change the PDF settings.

Hopefully its the same!

yes, it doesnt need distiller (i mean acrobat distiller) and i think maybe that's why it;s called direct export to PDF, and doesnt need any third party software.

You should be careful exporting out of Quark.

Quark can export files to PDFs, but you need to be careful.

Specifically, if you are using any of the text attribute functions in Quark (Bold, Italic, Outline, etc.) instead of using the actual Bold or Italic version of the font, there can be problems when the resulting PDF is used in a RIP.

Also you need to watch your export settings (under "options") to make sure the PDF output is appropriate to what ever the PDF will be used for. I think Quark's defaults are for screen/web viewing which are completely wrong for printing/publishing.

so - and forget me if i'm wrong - quack can export direct to pdf? agreed...but how?

does it not use jaws then? and are jaws pdf files able to generate say a 1.6pdf with live transparency?

the answers again is no

it uses jaws to create these pdf's, and to do that it generates postscript first = dead transparency.

so - from quark there is no way at all to keep live transparency - yet it touts itself as supporting transparency. anyone got the number for the advertising standards authority?

now i'm not saying that it will screw up every job - the point being that if you use transparency in your quark files, be very careful when going to pdf as it can <not always> screw your files.
