os9 CAN'T SEARCH intel xserve

After spending nearly 22 grand on a new xserve raid I find out NONE of my 20 os9 clients can sherlock anything! You've got to be kidding me right? Let me get this right, an apple can't search an apple fileserver! The apple sales folks might have said something about that BEFORE we bought it. They SUCK!

Does anyone know a way around this beside buying 20 buggy, slowass intel macs?

First, the barn door is open, and so the horse is long gone. Your post, while tragic, also provided some much needed comic relief. $22k on a xserve raid? Is it made of SOLID GOLD? And you didnt check to see if it was compatible BEFORE you bought it? My sides are aching from sweet, sweet laughter.

And now, on to some advice:

First, hire a contractor before you migrate to a new server. As you do not appear to be a Mac tech, (or if you are, you should not be) hiring someone to help look over your situation is invaluable, as you now know. "Mac consultant: uh dude, dont buy that just yet..."

Second, inform the sales person of your intended use of the product *before* purchasing. Expecting them to interrupt the sale with well thought out and timely questions directly related to your situation to head off problems is, well, retarded. Especially if the purchase is over, oh lets say, 20k just to have a number to play with.

Lastly, google found a post from a situation similar to yours where when the drive was formatted they (and it seems, you) did not install mac os 9 drivers. Why you would skip this step is strange, since you are so clearly in love with the 1990's and your business has not migrated from an OS that was declared "dead" (Steve Jobs words not mine) over 5 years ago. (google: "steve jobs" "os 9" "funeral" read and weep bitter tears.)

Perhaps you cannot install the OS 9 drivers on your server, I don't have enough info to know. (In your post, I suspect you really just wanted to vent. Everyone understands this need. I've done it too.) However, if you actually want help with your problem, the old rules for posting apply. You neglect to mention what OS your xserve is running, how the drives are formatted, what network protocols are involved, etc. Assuming its Tiger, you should follow the advice above, and install the OS 9 drivers asap. Alternatively, since I have been poking fun at you, I want to make it up to you. I found this advice (also from google): "install Searchlight, a $29.90 utility, on the XServe, and Netscape 7.02 on the Mac OS 9 clients. It's not perfect, but it's a solution."

searchlight link: http://www.caseapps.com/searchlight.html

Good luck.

OS 9 gets harder to support all the time

Hello,

I have had no OS 9 macs at home or work in about 4 years. I don't install the drivers or use classic or classic applications at all. Of course, I am lucky with a company that doesn't mess around with old technology. Lucky for me. Man, I feel sorry for anybody having to use 5 year old systems and software.

Many folks are not so lucky. Their boss, or company is really cheap, slow to spend and upgrade. Or, many of the members here ARE THE BOSS and have real issues with how to keep a struggling printing company afloat. You have to empathize some with these guys and in their situation they also have a hard time affording help to bring in experts for stuff. It's not easy to be in these situations.

All that said, I am game to try and assist people like that.. some. But, my ability slides as time goes by. I am too busy keeping all my software versions current and viable for today's machines and situations. I don't sell software for OS 9 at all. I have it, sure, tons of it, I could sell OS 9 apps. but I don't use it and don't want to encourage that it be used anymore.

dvsjr, you were pretty harsh but thanks for helping out and taking time to try and find a solution for motov8ed. motov8ed, about 8 or so of my macs are intel macs and my oldest system is 10.3.9. We have about 25 or 30 macs. There's nothing buggy about any of it. You should proceed to upgrade as fast as you can, it's all good. If you can't I understand and empathize, but if it's that you don't want to, I can't understand that and am willing to help you figure out any problems.

I was caught off-guard by the search issue, but I bet no one including myself would've ever thought a networked MAC of any kind could'nt do a search on a server built by MAC!

Done venting now, so let me explain our situation a little better.

We are a small lan with 2 servers and 22 clients. One pre-intel panther xserve (no problems) and one intel we recently purchased. 3 of the client computers are osx and the rest are os9. Our printing consists of about 240 small tifs on a letter size doc. Each tif is about 450k. We print to 2 minoltas, a bizhub c352 and a bizhub c6500 both w/fiery rips. We also abuse about 20 Tektronix phaser 850's. Our operators can each setup and print a job every 4.5 minutes using os9 machines. We were excited about replacing our aging machines with newer ones until we started experimenting with os10. Navigating through our 160,000+ images using X machines is VERY SLOW, os9 is instantaneous. Then theres the printing, in os9 print dialogs pop up immediately, printer specific options pop immediately, spooling starts almost immediately. OSX on my mac pro does'nt even come close to the speed of 9 doing these tasks. We can't switch out until X can display the speed characteristics we are used to.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will investigate further.

I'm all ears!

I think the issue you have with speed is not that the OSX machines are slower, but just not configured for what you need, or you may also need to up the RAM. I too have both, and do sometimes find things a bit easier in OS9, but I think once you get to using OSX all the time, you get to know what needs to be done to your machines to get them faster. If you are looking to an older server, or using classic made files, it seems to take longer, but if everything is in sync with OSX, you fly.

Thanks for the reply Cleveland.

The mac pro I'm on has dual 3.0's and 4 gigs of ram. I'm going to isolate the mac pro from the old network & panther server and create a mini network with just the new hardware and tiger server. Then I will add the art to the tiger server, create some native X files and see what happens.

I'm also going to load a font utility to deal with the fonts. When I installed this pro, I just loaded the fonts I wanted to use (about 80) in the library and let it fly. I have never had any font warnings or bitmapped fonts, so I figured everything was cool. But maybe having that many open at once is just killing the performance.

Thanks

Ain't none but I know what you feel.

I had a similar problem years ago when we were still migrating from 9 to X. I did think (then) that MacOsX was slow and buggy. Then I discovered that quite a number of type 1 fonts I was using were silently corrupt. I actually didn't think anybody was still using 9 for any reason. Rolling Eyes

Motov8ed,
Got a question for you on the OS9 can't search on intel machine. Is AFP (over Appletalk, not TCP/IP) enabled?

I am just curious mainly because I can't remeber if OS9 doesn't like anything but AppleTalk. Its been a while sinced I used it. But I am curious maybe thats preventing it to search? - TPD

fyi

we just use font book on our macs, no other font management software other than a script that runs a checksum against a master font repo .zip file and loads up the fonts.

But in your case, 80 fonts is nothing our designers have 1000 fonts loaded or more all the time.

AFP is a performance hog and I wouldn't be shocked to hear it randomly deletes file on an Xserve. I hope your mini-network experiment solves your upgrade woes. Mac-minis have to out perform those OS9 machines I should think at this point.

good luck,

Bob
