Basys problems
We have a basys uv setter 57f. It is probably an older model than yours. We generally achieve very good results with our machine, but we have experienced some problems, so maybe I can help. Your comments are pretty general, so I will give you some general information, and you can respond more specifically if you would like more information.
I have found that not all plates are equal. You might want to test several plates to be sure you are using the best available, cost effective plate. You should still be able to save money over other types of plates, but you might need something better than you are using. We are using a high speed uv plate manufactured by Anacoil. It enables us to run at 6 units which is as fast as our machine will go.
Processing is also important. You may need to slow the speed down so the developer has more time to work on the coating. Keep fresh wash water, and don't let the gum get too thick. Check pressure, covers, brushes, etc. to be sure processor is doing a good job. Make sure developer is not being sprayed directly on the plate. I've seen this create uneven development. It should spray against a roller to get more even distribution. Our processor is not the best, and we get by with it. It's not rocket science, but it can definately be a factor.
The overlay is also important. Start fresh with a base overlay, and hand develop the plate. I can still achieve better results hand developing than I can with our processor. I rinse the plate off with water, and buff it dry. You don't want to rub hard when you are developing the plate. Apply chemistry liberally, and gently develop the plate with a circular motion. It is important to do a good job developing the plate because the plate is going to be scanned to detrmine which areas in the cell are getting more light than others. The overlay that is produced will compensate for the uneven exposure. If the image on the plate doesn't represent the true exposure, the overlay won't be any good. In my experience it usually takes a base exposure, and 2-3 iterations to achieve good results. If this isn't the case you probably have a plate or processing issue.
You may know this already, but the overlay test pattern is 1-17 micron pixel on, and 1 17 micron pixel off. This would be a difficult test for any ctp device. It doesn't take much for this to look less than perfect. If you can get this to look "good", your plates should look good. Not too many thermal plate systems can even do this. I think it is safe to say not all conventional plates can either.
The light bulb is only available from Basys or a Basys dealer or autherized Basys service organization. I think we pay $1500 us for our bulbs. I think everyone pays the same regardless who you buy from.
Is your machine under a service contract?
If you are not able to achieve good results, there must be a problem that can be corrected.
