showing large character spacing in pdf

hi
I have pdf where acrobat reader professional v8 is showing large character spacing inspite of the fact that characters are closely packed.

eg. charspacing for current word is .28 & it looks as : exponenti-
Details that sre shown by reader are :
Font : cmr9
Fontsize : 9
charspacing : 0.28
wordspacing : 0
horizontal scaling : 100%
Baseline offset : 0 pt
stroke width : 1 pt

the font is embedded.

can anyone explain me the reason for such display?

Fonts Problem in PDF File

Hello and Welcome,

Yes, most likely the font is not embedded inside the PDF, so the one used for display in the PDF is not same as the one used in the authoring application.

Use Adobe Acrobat Professional, not Reader. If you look in the File >Document Properties >Fonts Tab

Look at the fonts listed here. If they do not say "Embedded" next to each one, then not all fonts are embedded INSIDE the pdf. Thus a substitution is occuring with a font that has different spacing etc.

You have to find better way of PDF creation that will always embed all fonts, then, will not have these issues. HTH.

if that isn't it, you may have a corrupt printer description file for that font, maybe

well I am using professional version of reader & it's showing that fonts included are embedded.
the question is that how they are manipulating horizontal scaling with such a large character spacing.

PDF font display

Is that font a TruType font? If it is, there's a bug that's been discovered. I had a similar problem earlier this year. There is no fix for it; you just have to use a postscript font.

Depending on what type of font it is, you can use a program like fontographer to change it from a truetype to a postscript, or vis-versa
