How to create the "Adobe PDF" printer in Mac OS X

Hi, I was pruning a bunch of extra printers created by a user, I accidentally deleted the "Adobe PDF" printer in Mac OS 10.3.6. How can I recreate it, is it loaded with the OS? After reloading Adobe Acrobat 6 it is still not there, but that install is just a copy function from the CD. Of course my PDF-X-Robot is still fine because it doesn't care if I have that or not, but I still need the "Adobe PDF" printer to print various non-prepress stuff to be viewed in Adobe Acrobat PDF. Help.

RE: create "Adobe PDF" printer in Mac OS X 10.3 pr

This is how you do it. Also, you are correct, PDF-X-Robot does not even need a printer at all in Print Center to do it's thing and make plate ready PDF files. Of course, you would need one setup if you want robot to print proofs of the PDF files for you after they are made.

If you are Unable to add that "Adobe PDF" printer to the Mac OS X 10.3 with Printer Setup Utility it's a pretty common problem. You really don't do that in Mac OS X Print Center after deleting it.

When you install Adobe Acrobat 6 on Mac OS X 10.3, the "Adobe PDF" Printer is added to the Print Center automatically. The Readme includes instructions about how to add that Adobe PDF Printer again if deleted, but these instructions don't have the specific UNIX terminal commands you need to complete the process, and they also list the incorrect location of the Adobe PDF file. . . .

This is for Adobe Acrobat 6.x on Mac OS X 10.x

First, you complete the process as outlined in the Readme file to re-install the Adobe PDF Printer to the Print Center, the printer will still be missing from the Print Center

Next: Add the Adobe PDF Printer to the Print Center by deleting the AdobePDF file and restarting Acrobat.

(A) Quit Acrobat and Print Center if they are running.

(B) Delete the Adobe PDF file in the Library/Application Support/Adobe folder.

(C) Next start Adobe Acrobat 6. After that you'll then be prompted for the machine's admin name and password for Acrobat to repair the Adobe PDF printer.

(D) Then start Print Center, and then verify that Adobe PDF has been added to the Printer List.

(E) Quit Print Center.

RE: deleted "Adobe PDF" printer in Mac OS X 10.3

Here's the terminal unix type procedure, for those who prefer it. Also a very simple procedure to get started and try terminal for command line beginners. Not too difficult and shows you a couple of easy procedures in terminal unix.

To Re-installing a deleted Adobe PDF printer:

When you install Acrobat, the Adobe PDF printer is created automatically in the Print Center. Here are the steps to re-install the Adobe PDF printer if it is accidentally deleted:

(1) Exit Acrobat and/or Distiller if running.

(2) Open the Terminal application (located in Applications/Utilities).

(3) Type "cd /usr/libexec/cups/backend/" (without quotes) and hit Return (cd is the command for change directory, so all you are doing is navigating to a different directory)

(4) Type "ls -l" (without quotes) and hit Return (ls just means list, so it is just showing you all the files in that folder)

(5) You should see a file named "pdf" You need to remove this file.

(6) Type the command "sudo rm pdf" (without quotes) and hit Return (sudo means "give me the rights to do this" and rm means remove)

(7) You will be prompted for a password. Enter in your Mac OS X account password the one you use to log into the Mac, and hit Return.

(Cool Quit Terminal and Restart Acrobat. You will then be prompted for your Admin password and/or your Acrobat serial number.

Your Adobe PDF printer should now be re-created and listed in the Print Center.

How do you network a Printer that is connected to my MAC to another computer using Windows Vista? I have a brand new MAC Desktop connected to a HP Printer. I also have a Windows Vista PC and would like to print to the printer connected to the MAC Desktop. Is this possible to do? Where do I find out how to make this happen?
