RE: How to submit data, best format for VDP variable data
Hi, I am wanting to know what is the best format to send and exchange data files for Variable Data Printing. I guess I am trying to decide between Microsoft Excel, FileMaker Pro, CSV, comma delimited text, etc. Is there a preferred standard used for VDP and POD suppliers? If I send a file for use with an Indigo, using Quark Xpress template and yours truly Xtension from Quark for the method of preparation, what is the best data file to submit for that?

I like to see tab delimited text with first row as field names, a header row. This is easily viewable in any database application or a web browser, or a text editor. I think tab delimited text is the most reliable and compatible data file that you can exchange because you can easily read it into and database application. So, the compatability is great from application to application. You can save a database or export a data file to tab delimited text from any database application, FileMaker Pro, Excel, MySQL, etc. and can read it back ito any of these as well.
