RE: Print On Demand search Engine, Variable data Printing Search Engine

Hi everybody,

Off my prepress Trade Search Engine, I have made an On Demand Printing area with most commonly searched devices and software etc. Here's a link to it, at the bottom you can find news articles on POD (Print On Demand Printing) and VDP (Variable Data Printing) and important links to browse through on there.

RE: Print on Demand, Print On Demand Publishing, POD News

Wow, that's very slick because it has links to all the most common POD (print on demand) and VDP (variable data printing) equipment, resources, and common searches. Very cool reading, lots of good info. The community is turning into quite a portal these days.

This is a great list, thank you.

The VDP (software side) solution we are using the most these days is XMPie's uDirect InDesign plugin.

RE: XMPie's uDirect InDesign plugin

Hello, how do you handle the VDP from Quark Xpress users as customer? Does this XMPie's uDirect have a Quark Xpress 7 xtension support too?

There is no plug-in for quark (see http://xmpie.com/home.php ) for us we just convert (using markzware's convert) the quark docs to indesign and go from there.

XMpie has no Quark Xtension support?

Wow, that's really limited to have no Quark Xtension at all. I had no idea that XMpie had no Quark Xpress support. I thought it was very pricey and we went with PageFlex for integration and flexibility to our ERP and other systems was a better fit. We have Printable but never use it. Converting from Quark is not necessary if you have YoursTruly Designer for Indigo work and the Xtensions that come with PageFlex. We do 100% of our VDP from either Quark Xpress for complex design intensive VDP or Adobe Acrobat with print shop mail for the down and dirty stuff. If it comes in InDesign, we just PDF it and drop it in as art underneath the VDP done in Quark or Yours Truly Designer. I have found too many issues in trying to convert documents from application to application and prefer to lock it in as designed and apply the VDP as a layer.

Automation with variable data has been done in Quark since before Adobe even bought pagemaker. We were doing automation of VDP in Quark before it (VDP) was even a printing term. I can fully automate anything in either these days but Quark Xpress is still my tool of choice for prepress automation. I have customers that prefer Adobe InDesign solutions and do many projects like that. But, if a customer gives me an automation task to design a solution I prefer Quark Xpress as my tool of choice, every time.

I see this thread has been dead for a while but I didn't want to start a new thread especially as this is my first post here.

I work for a MarCom that creates multi-channel, tailored marketing programs for our clients. We use a proprietary software that merges cosumer info and creative content (copy) into a single comma delimited data file that our current vendor "merges" into out layout templates with Designmerge. I've been tasked with finding alternate vendors. Anybody have any recommendations? I figured it would be easiest to find a vendor that uses the same VDP solution especially since I find it to be a pretty robust extension.

Thanks for any responses. Very Happy

DesignMerge is available for QuarkXPress and InDesign

There are several advantages to plug-in technology in the VDP space. The most important advantage is that the DesignMerge software can utilize the two most powerful and popular composition engines in the world, QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign. All of the composition features that you have grown accustomed to are fully supported by DesignMerge. Every aspect of the composition process, including kerning and letterspacing, hyphenation and justification, runarounds, multi-page composition, styling, tables, etc. are all available for you to use. You just take an existing document, and use DesignMerge to "Make It Variable". Your variable output will look just like you did File/Print for each individual data record.
