We recently upgraded from quark 4.1 on os 9 to 6.5 on 10.4.6 and we are no longer able to print to our laserjets (5000 and 8000) directly from qxp 6.5. We have to export the layouts as pdfs and then print from Acrobat. Have tried changing the output to ascii and clean 8-bit but we only get garbage output on many sheets of paper. We have a Windows 2003 server on a 100BT network. Just downloaded and installed the new driver from HPs web site. Was able to print direct to the 5000 once from Quark but not anymore. Now, jobs says it is processing then the display changes back to 'READY'. Poof....the print job is gone. 8000 queue displays 'network host is busy, will retry in 30 seconds' and nothing ever prints out. Did have a job go through to the printer once but the display changed to 'DATA RECEIVED' and nothing printed out. Anyone with any ideas? TIA.

Welcome, Before we jump to conclusions, an HP RIP is a clone interpreter. So, there is code in newer EPS and PDF graphics that will fail on these HP clone RIPs, they are not adobe RIP. So, having covered that, let's be sure to take some really plain Quark output to test with. Be sure we have an easy to RIP simple document.

Wish you had PDF-X-Robot, it would generate PDF, save it, and print to that current selected printer from Acrobat in one step. I'm curious here that the Acrobat prints but not Quark Xpress, to the same printer that is setup... A PDF is far easier for any RIP to handle than a postscript stream.

Delete all configurations to that printer in Printer Setup, start over from scratch. I would say for starters be sure you are printing direct and that there are no print servers tying up that HP. A windows print server can try to kill direct connectivity to printers. Windows print servers have NO BUSINESS inbetween Desktop Publishing workstations and printers, if that's an issue there, need to deal with that. Next, try and print with Appletalk, not IP or other. On your Mac OS X, go to network control panel, BE SURE Appletalk is selected ON. Most of our networking these days is IP but when it comes to printer connectivity, Appletalk is still the most reliable connectivity. HTH

I'll ask my IT dept. to set the printers up direct on Appletalk without using a print queue/spooler and see if that works. Still don't understand why I was able to print to the 5000 directly with the new driver and shortly thereafter lost that ability.....although a consultant was doing some testing on my Mac when I went on break....hmmm.

Hi Amerty, Did you figure that problem out, I had a similar issue months ago and wasn't sure what actually fixed it. After going through all kinds of stuff I seemed to not be able to affect it. Then one day it just works. I think it was the windows print server trying to take control of the printer and hide it from the macs trying to connect directly? But, I haven't had it happen in months now.
