FreeFlight Integration

Hi Joe,

I have not had a chance to download your "FreeFlight" software to try it out but though I would ask this up front....

Have you integrated it into your Scope workflow at all? I know it's a stand alone app but you should be able to have Scope fire a file out to it and back.

Like I said, haven't tried it yet, but look forward to having some time next week to play with it.

Cheers,
theShaft

FreeFlight integration with Esko-Graphics Scope WorkFlow

Well, yes, we use FreeFlight and PDF-X-Robot to prepare all our PDF files before the Scope. So, once it hits the Scope, there's really no verifying needed. All our preflight, and file repair is done up front in the source files <before> making a PDF. We look at separations in the PDF in acrobat, output a laser with PDF-X-Robot automatically. We review the PDF visually with the laser.

Then we drop to Scope by hot folder. Out comes a high res for imposing, a low res web proof, and a contract proof to Epson 10600. that's all automatic by hot folder, a smart name gets job number from file names and puts all files into proper job folder on the Xserve. Our PDF files are in VERY good shape prior to ever hitting the Scope. We have done same with Brisque with robot for about 3 years now. Very tight on quality of the pdf.

I see, you're cleaning it all up ahead of time pre Normailizing in Esko.

Are you happy with your Scope Workflow so far? Speed, Flexibility, Trapping?

How about the Editor Eh? So much easier to fix things than with Pitstop!

(Hopefully) about to evaluate Freeflight in comparison to Flightcheck products and new preflight capabilities of Quark 7.

Preflight for Graphic Design, Application Or Process?

hi bcwt,

The preflight in quark is pretty decent but not able to see a nested RGB or improper color space image that is embedded into a pdf or eps, then placed into quark. This same problem exists with adobe indesign's built in preflight capability. Additionally, QuarkXpress 7 and Adobe Indesign CS2 preflight cannot always see fonts required by the placed eps or pdf file. If these placed EPs and PDF have not got all fonts embedded, you need to know which they are so you can activate them.

So, if you run FreeFlight™ on the images folder first. See what fonts may be required but NOT embedded in the EPS and PDF files. See what RGB there are to fix and deal with, BEFORE doing the Adobe InDesign CS2 or QuarkXpress 7 built in preflight process.

Then, proceed with the process in the native layout application you will have a pretty fast and effective preflight process without spending any extra money on Markzware FlightCheck or similar commercial software tools. I wrote an article about preflight recently that you may want to look at. It oulines all the many tols available and also goes over preflight as a process. Too many folks look at preflight as if it's a software you run, they really miss the most important part of what it's all about. If folks really preflight COMPLETELY, no single software can or will ever do it all. Here's a link. Preflight for Graphic Design and Prepress, An Application Or Process?

I read the article JP, that's a great article and will help allot of folks get on track, especially graphic designers and publishers.

joepostscript,

This is a great article. I am looking forward to trying out freeflight as a backup to indesign's preflight. Any time I can, I avoid flightcheck like the plague. it is cumbersome, bloated, and its inability to work with Quark 7 is a major pain. I am trying to imagine a world where all the files come in to prepress really and truly ready to print. Keep up the good work!
