Esko-Graphics BackStage Pilot v3.0.1, Installing, Operation:

Esko Scope BackStage has a client application 'Pilot' and is of course available on Mac and Windows. The client is a site license and unlike other similar Prepress servers with remote network clients like say Creo/Scitex Brisque, the licesee is not charged for every single client. A user of Esko Graphics BackStage Server gets as many network clients as he needs, very nice.

Every Mac OS X machine that runs Esko BackStage Pilot needs to have its host file edited in order to operate in the best manner. So before you install your Esko BackStage Server Scope client, Backstage Pilot 3.0.1 you need to edit the hosts file. This is really pretty simple but does require you to have the admin password for that machine.

Mac OS X 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger:

(1) Edit Mac Host File

To proceed, you must know the admin password for the Mac, IP address of the BackStage Server, and the name of the Backstage Server. In the directions, DO NOT TYPE THE QUOTES, they are just used here to indicate the start/stop of exact text to be typed into terminal.

(a) open a terminal (via applications - utilities)
(b) type "cd /etc"
enter
(c) type "sudo pico hosts"
enter
(d) fill in the admin password
enter
(e) edit the file, see example below, use down arrow to add the
new test to the bottom line of the hosts file. On that last line,
add the BackStage Server IP address, “tab”, the BackStage
Server
(f) close the file by hitting ctrl-x
(g) type “y” for yes
(h) hit return to save file as “hosts”


Below is a sample host file for sake of example, notice, all
you are doing is adding 1 line at the bottom, it's simply the
Server Name + Tab + Server IP Address:

(2) Install The Esko BackStage Pilot Software:

(a) Download and Expand the Backstage Pilot Macintosh Installer
(b) Follow normal prompts, is a very standard installer


(3) Logging In, Esko BackStage Pilot Software:
----------------------------------------

(a) On Localized Authentication Machine, most common, try

user: YourEskoUserName@YourEskoServerName
pass: YourEskoPassword
server: YourEskoServerIPaddress

*if your servers are setup under a domain or authentication server
try to apply your domain name with your user name and server name
to find the right credentials for your networking authentication.

*Mac OS X Panther Only!

you will get an error at login, this error below. Simply click the button "Ignore" when you login and it will login fine. This does not happen with OS X 10.4 machines and I don't think this bug will be fixed since is happening on an old OS. So, always click "Ignore" when you get this message below. There is no actual problem besides this error. I use Backstage Pilot on mostly 10.3 machines with no issue other than the message itself..

Error: Unable to connect to the application server.
Stop and start the application server via 'Manage Local Application Server' in Server Admin or check the log file.
