Need help creating a press quality PS in MS Publisher!!

I know I am behind the times but you work with what you have.

I am making a 52pg 4/4 color brochure in MS Publisher.
The printer I am working with does not have Publisher for me to give them the original file and so I am trying to find a way to make the 900mg .pub file into a Press Quality CMYK file. Either PDF that will not change the colors to RGB or a Postscript.

My problem when trying to save as a PS is that although I do have a color printer hooked up to my pc, the Generic Postscript Printer I have installed will not print color. I NEED HELP!

Can anyone inform me of any way that I can do this successfully?

Thanks in advance!!
Heather

Too Late To Help?

Hi,

This is probably too late to help you, but I found this info here:

http://www.printingforless.com/rgb-cmyk.html

Microsoft Publisher 2000:
Microsoft Publisher defaults to RGB. It is easy to convert everything to a CMYK color space or to start a new document using the CMYK color space.

Use the following menu options: Tools/Commercial Printing Tools/ Color Printing and select Process colors (CMYK). Please note that all images incorporated into a layout need to be linked and not embedded in order to maintain the CMYK color space within the image. Using the following menu options does this: Tools/Commercial Printing Tools/Graphics Manager and highlight the embedded image. Click Link and click Browse to locate the original file and link to it. You will then need to send both the images and the layout file to us for printing.

Maybe it will help in the future Smile

Microsoft Publisher convert to CMYK

Hi, there is now as of Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional a way to convert colors into CMYK, this will leave the text in 4cp though. I wish there were a plug-in that could change or fix the text to 4 color black only and rest to CMYK color space. I have quite a box of tricks which does pretty good but gives you a dark gray text, not 100% black... There are still some very simple PDF problems that lack an appropriate tool to repair them.

PitStop saved my life

If you are looking for a solution to the rich black vs 100% black that you get with most conversions to CMYK, I suggest you check out Pitstop and fix it on the PDF level. Problems with colors? Change them. Photos not optimized for press? Edit them. Fonts not embedding? Convert them to curve.

Most of MS products can be printed to a PDF file using Acrobat, the plug in available from MS's website or using a third party conversion like CutePDF. Each comes with a printer driver that prints to a postscript file and distills it to a pdf.

No offense to those who must use MS products for their DTP, but I refuse to work with native Word, Publisher and Excel files anymore. PDF's are so easily manipulated and color corrected in Pitstop, it's saved me HOURS of frustration and at the hourly rate I charge... it was WELL worth the price tag.

Hope this helps Smile

And to Heather's original Question...

(I may be too late, but just in case someone else has the same problem...)

For creating a PS file to send out to a Service Bureau/Print Shop...
Instead of using the Generic Postscript Driver, you might want to consider installing the driver from the service bureau you will be sending the final file. They would more than likely be MORE than happy to give it to you if it means they won't have to fight with your file (grin)

Then just install it as a dummy printer... it doesn't have to actually be connected to your computer. Just use it with the "print to file" option in your print dialog box.

If you are just looking for something so you can distill the PS into a PDF, you can google your favorite color printer with all the features you want and install their driver.
