Printing Problems Mac OS X Cannot open the printer [63]

Hi, I am having no luck trying to fix this problem:

I can't print or make PDFs. My computer did not crash or anything - I just sent something to print as usual and it won't print.

I can't print from any application - quark, entourage, word, photoshop, safari, etc. And I'm trying 3 different printers - two are printing through a server and one is directly linked to my computer but I print through RIP software.

It looks like my computer can see the printers, it just can't open them.

These are the errors I get "Cannot open the printer [63]". Then when I click OK, I get "Unknown error [-30871]".

In Entourage I get that I do not have enough memory to print. I have 46 GB on one hard drive available and 40 GB on my other hard drive available - so I don't think not enough memory is the problem.

I tried deleting the printers from my list and then adding them again and that didn't work and then I tried using then I tried this from you site:

- Run Disk First Aid, Regularly in OS X -

With OS X 10.3 panther, you can only run Disk First Aid (repair) on a startup disk from the installer CD. To do this, put in the installer, reboot holding down the "C" key till you are booted from the CD and looking at the OS X installer.

Go to the apple menu at upper left, go "Disk First aid" . Then, select your startup disk and run "Repair Disk"

When that's done, reboot from the internal startup disk, go into Applications/Utilities/Disk First Aid . Now, select the startup disk and run "Repair Permissions" This can take several minutes and will clean up many issues of file ownership and permissions between critical files. "Repair Permissions" is a very important maintenance item that should be run regularly.

But I'm running 10.4.8 and I tried to use older installer disks 10.3 - I just tried the install disc 1. Will it still work using older discs? Is that what you mean by install discs? There are 3 (?) discs, I used the first one. I didn't have the option "disk first aid" from the apple menu once I rebooted - I wasn't able to access any of the options.

Can you give me any more information or any more help of what to do?

Thanks,
Have a great day!

Running Disk First Aid and Repair Prmissions Mac OS X 10.4.8

Hello Gillian,

I posted this up so that others could benefit from the problem and answer given someday. You are easy to help with your detailed question including exact error messages and all. Very nice.

OK, here's the deal. You are in Mac OS X 10.4.8 Tiger. There has been a slight change in how you access that Disk First Aid from the startup disk. So, yes, you have three disks, Disk 1 is the right one to use. When you are done, have a look at my free preflight software, http://free-preflight.com

(1) Start up your computer using another disk.
To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc and restart your computer holding down the Option key, then select the Install Mac OS X disc and click the arrow.

(2) Open Disk Utility.
If you're using the Mac OS X Install disk, follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it., and then choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility.

(3) Select the startup disk in the list of disks and volumes, then click First Aid.

(4) Check the S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. If you can't see it, be sure you selected the hard disk your volume is on, and not the volume itself.

(5) If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "About to Fail," back up your files on the disk as soon as possible and replace the disk.

(6) If the S.M.A.R.T. Status is "Verified" or "Not supported," click Repair Disk to repair the disk.

If Disk Utility tells you to look for links to corrupt files in the DamagedFiles directory, two or more files occupy the same space on your hard disk and at least one of them is likely to be corrupt. Examine each affected file in the DamagedFiles folder, which at the top-level of the affected disk. If you can replace it or recreate the file, delete it. If it contains necessary information, open it and examine its data to make sure it has not been corrupted.

If Disk Utility cannot repair your disk or reports "The underlying task reported failure," try to repair the disk again. If that doesn't work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat your disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and restore your backed up data. If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced. See an authorized Apple dealer for more information.

You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X installed.

In Disk Utility,

(1) Select the startup disk in the list.

(2) Click First Aid.

(3) Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.

As it works, Disk Utility may print messages about its progress and the special permissions some files use. These messages do not mean your files' permissions were incorrect.
