I downloaded FreeFlight....every pdf file I drag over gives me this message:

I do not get the error on any of my test machines or files. Are you getting the error on tiff files, jpeg files? We need to first verify that this is not happening on other files and file types. This will tell us if it's the individual PDF file, PDF format in general, or maybe if this is happening on Tiff and or Jpeg, it has nothing to do with the PDF and is a system or internet issue.

Also, I will email you both to see if you can get a copy of the PDF to test here. If you have a file anomally I need to use the files to see how to address it programmatically.

Are you getting the error on tiff files, jpeg files?

Paint, what OS are you using?

OK my bad, I just realized it only works with OS 10.3 and higher,
I was on a OS 10.2.8 machine. So I will be able to run it on some of my machines
just not all of them.

Oh, nice job guys. I hadn't thought of that. This is an universal application and thus is a very modern tool. It runs native on both G5 and Mac Intel boxes. It may have issues running on older OS like that and I had not even thought of that.

But, the error is pointing to the caching of preflight results and the aggregation of reporting. After it aggregates an caches all the results and report, it uses Safari to display these results.

With regard to PDF files, the app will ONLY do the following 3 important things:

(1) report RGB files or bad color format embedded inside a PDF
(2) report if there's images linked but NOT embedded
(3) report if there's fonts used but NOT embedded

So, it's just important to point out that this is not a very complete preflight on PDF. But, it does cover to me, the worst possible problems that you will get in a PDF file. The PDF file to me is not really an appropriate graphic to use as a placed image into another application. PDF to me is a final file. So, the tool is really geared toward that end. The tool is really to supplement a good preflight of Quark Xpress and Adobe InDesign <before> making PDF files.

If you place a PDF into Indesign or Quark Xpress with any of the above issues, InDesign's preflight and Quark Xpress preflight cannot properly see or report on the above three issues. So, thus FreeFlight was writtent to do exactly that. As a stand alone tool used on final PDF files it is good, and is useful, but is not designed to catch all the bad things that can reside in a PDF file. So, while on the subject of preflighting PDF files I thought it important to clarify that.
