I have a HP 7550 that is a couple of years old, so I hooked it up to my new iMac. I couldn't locate the correct driver or ppd for it so I downloaded the Cups+Gutenprint v5.0.0 ppd for it and set it up from the Printer Setup Utility. From any app, even say Text Edit, I can select the printer and send a document to print, but in the print manager I get the message "Generic Class: Waiting for Device", and it just sits there spooling. However, when I log out of OSX it will immediately go over to the printer and prints out. It will not do anything until I log out! It is quite perplexing, and advice will be appreciated. Thanks ....

What is wrong with a normal HP 7550 installer software? I would not go with all that Gutenprint stuff when there's a manufacturers installer. As opposed to Cups and all that opensource business use the HP Photosmart printer driver for OS X 10.2 to 10.4x .

Sounds like the opensource stuff isn't installing under correct credentials to operate. That's why on log-out it will act, I think.. It's because some driver or cache activity does not have correct permissions to operate. See if that new driver works and post back.

Greetings Joe, and thanks for responding so quickly. The reason I went to the opensource option is that I tried this installer previously and never could get it to complete properly. I tried again from the link you supplied and got the same result. Here's what happens : The HP installer installs some files and opens up the HP Setup Assistant. It finds the printer (photosmart 7550), and it then opens up a window that instructs you to open the Printer Setup Utility, click "Add Printer", then click "More Printers" and select "hp photosmart" from the drop down list. This where I stall out because "hp photosmart" doesn't show up in the list. When I click on "More Printers" it takes me to a "Printer Browser" window where my choices are Appletalk, Bluetooth or Windows Printing. I am sure I missing something but I'm not sure what it is! In that Printer Browser window there is a pull-down window that says "Print Using (Please select a driver or printer model)", but the hp doesn't show up there either. What say you? Thanks again ...

If you look manually into this directory,

Mac HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj

Do you see the associated PPD files for your printer? If so, copy to desktop, expand if is .gz, open in BBEdit and do a Save As, "New Name" and must be PLAIN TEXT file with extension ".PPD"

Now, copy that new file back into directory, reboot.

Delete all printers, now re-establish that printer with Printer Setup Utility. See if that will do the trick.

I looked and the only ppd files for the printer that I see are the ones from the Cups+Gutenburg download. So I don't think I have a really good ppd for the printer to work with. I tried to do what you suggested with the Gutenburg ppd but to no avail. Do you know where I can procure a good ppd for this printer? Thanks ..

I was in the same predicament as you before I found the solution a few minutes ago (literally).

The solution is to simply force quit the HP Communications program using Activity Monitor. I don't have to buy a new printer anymore.
