Prepress, Matching a customer's proof

We receive scans from a 3rd party along with his Kodak proof.

We run the tif through our color managed system (Rampage, Epson 10600) which has been profiled and outputs hires proofs that match our press.

The client likes the proofs that the 3rd party scan guy makes, which don't match ours since our destination is out 6c press profile.

We had the scanner guy print out the ECI2002V chart on his system.

I read the swatches with Gretags Spectroscan and created a profile named "AurthursProofs"

The question is:

What steps do I take with the tif file?

I open the image, honoring the embedded profile if its present.

Do I then Convert the color space to "AurthursProofs" , then save with the profile embedded?

I notice that during the convert process, the color does not change on screen while the pixels do change. I notice GCR being applied.

When proofing to the Epson, the colors are flat and do not match his proof.

NOTE: In the Rampage RIP, our 6-40 coated icc is applied.

What am I doing wrong in photoshop?

Do I need to recreate the "AurthursProofs" icc in ProfileMaker a different way? I used the "Offset" preset.

hi tlotzer,

Since you measured the the eci2002 from the scan guy, you have the measured value. compare it to the measured value from your 6C press.
from there you can see the delta E of booth devices. If the color gamut of your press can not reach the 3rd party proof, there is no way to simulate.

Cheers!

Lets break this down the old fashion way. One - are the files coming from the 3rd party RGB or CMYK, otherwise, who is doing the CMYK changeover. Two - if the proofs are coming from a photographer - forget it, I have rarely seen proofs that are color calibrated from one. If the color proofs are CMYK from color house, they use a generic profile which does not match any press, just a canned profile that makes their photos look good. What you may want to do is take the original files from 3rd party and proof them yourself for your customer to show them exactly how they are going to print, and try to expain to them that the 3rd party is just making proofs with an unrealistic chance to be printed like that.

Update:

I found that if I open the client's tif in Photoshop, I check to see what color profile has been tagged to the file. It happens to be a Kodac profile. I then convert to our 6-40 Coated profile. Note, you can view the separate channels, before and after, to see the changes.

Usually his files have very little in the Black channel. After conversion the black channel gains more detail from the other three channels.

I then output a proof on our calibrated Epson 10600. usually we can then hit the supplied proof after 4 attempts at changing the file's colors.

I inherited the Prepress Manager position here at my job. I knew most of the Prinergy technical workarounds to begin with but the color management part is making me insane. So I was wondering if anyone has a good guide for using ProfileMaker. We currently have v 4.1 Professional. This will be used for calibrating our DocuColor 242 and Epson 9800's a bit better. They are close to press, but generally run a bit red and I want to correct that so I do not have to explain it 50 times a day.

Any help is appreciated.
